Charter an Original Maine Friendship Sloop
Sazerac

Close hauled on way to Castine

Built in Friendship, Maine by Wilbur Morse in 1913.  Rebuilt in the 1940s and in 1967 at the Bald Mountain Boat Works, in Camden, Maine.  Impeccably maintained for past 25 years at Paul Bryant's yard (Riverside Boat Company, Newcastle).

Particulars: Three sails (gaff-rigged main, staysail with club boom, jib; all new in 2003, Nathaniel Wilson, Oceanus cloth); 35' LOA (42' with bowsprit); 12' beam; 5.5' draft; 18,000 lb displacement; Universal 42 HP diesel engine (new in 1997); caulked fir strip deck (rebuilt 1995); wheel steering (Edson mechanism); Danforth and Fisherman's anchors; Type I life vests with strobes; interior rebuilt in 1997; 6 foot headroom; 4 single bunks (2 forward in V arrangement, 2 in main part of cabin); fully enclosed head; dining table; small galley with two-unit propane stove and sink; Autohelm speed and depth; Raytheon VHF; Garmin 182C GPS color chart plotter; 6.5 knot hull speed.

Her generous cockpit put to use carrying family and friends                                           Sitting quietly at her mooring on Islesboro (click for larger photo)

Her tender is an authentic Maine Peapod, built in 1985 by Eric Dow, of Brooklin.  Shaw & Tenney oars.  The Peapod is 13.5' in length, and an absolute joy to row.  She is the perfect complement to a Friendship.

Moored at Ryder's Cove on Islesboro, easily reached by State of Maine ferry; free parking at safe location. If preferred, boarding can be arranged for Castine, which is just across East Penobscot Bay from Ryder's Cove. Delivery to other destinations in Penobscot Bay also possible.

Extremely seaworthy, and not difficult to handle, but experience with large gaff-rigged craft is advised.

Read Cruising Rules, Relationships at Sea, by Roland Barth, a book based on experiences aboard Sazerac. Roland Barth owned her for twenty years, from about 1973 - 1993.  We purchased her from Roland in 1993.

Sazerac had the distinction in 2007 and  2008 of being “the Commodore’s boat,” as Roger was the Commodore of the Friendship Sloop Society in those years.

She is usually overboard about the middle of June, and hauled about the middle of September. She spends the winters at Riverside Boat Company in Newcastle under the expert care of Paul Bryant.

We ordinarily charter from Saturday to Saturday (excepted as noted in parentheses).  Our availability for the 2009 season is as follows.  Weeks that are taken or not available are in blue.  Weeks for which a deposit has been promised, but not yet received (and thus possibly still available) are in green. This page is current as of June 10, 2009.

All charters will ultimately be processed through Northpoint Yacht Charters (www.northpointyachtcharters.com) for insurance reasons.  But feel free to contact me directly with questions.  .
